  1. 1963 -  The Soviet spacecraft Mars 1 passes within about 120,000 miles of Mars.  Its radio fails, and no information is sent back.

  3. 1965 -  Several Soviet and U.S. space missions are launched.  One, the U.S. Mariner 4, passes within 900 miles (1450 km) of the Red Planet and sends back 22 photos.  They show craters and other physical features.
